Humanitarian Aid, for Haiti today and to help in any future disasters.

Since 2009 The Scout Association has been working with humanitarian aid charity ‘Shelterbox’. You may have seen Shelterbox on TV this week following the tragic earthquake in Haiti.  Shelterbox provide emergency shelter, cooking equipment, sleeping materials, water purifiers etc for an extended family of 10 following major disasters. Boxes have already reached Haiti, 400 more are on their way and 600 more will be sent tomorrow.

Both organisations are launching a new challenge.  The new Shelterbox Challenge can be found at http://www.youngshelterbox.org/partnership.php just click on the challenge.  Essentially this helps leader not only plan a programme but also ensure it is balanced and meets the various zones whilst delivering the Global aspects of the programme.  The challenge last 10 months starting in March and includes the Big Green Box Week in June.  As well as the online resources there are some freebies available by emailing their education unit.  There is even a badge!

This challenge and the www.shelterbox.org.uk website has some fantastic Global resources.  Why not get together with another section and carry out an International partnership Award working with Shelterbox.  If you would like to collect funds for a Shelterbox, as long as you raise more than £50 you are allocated a box number and will be notified which disaster your box is sent to.  A single box costs £490 for the content and shipping to anywhere in the world within 48 – 72hrs of the disaster occurring.
